800 VDC and Vera Rubin: How NVIDIA's Next Platform Rewrites Data Center Electrical Design

An 800 VDC data center converts utility AC to 800 volts DC once, at the row or the facility, and distributes DC to racks that step it straight down to GPU voltages. NVIDIA is driving the change because a 1 MW rack on 54 V busbars would need about 200 kg of copper and 64 U of power shelves. Sidecar hardware ships in 2026, native 800 VDC buildings follow in 2027–2029, and most of what they need is poured, hung or trenched when the shell is built.

Two power chains side by side: the legacy AC chain from utility medium voltage through a low-voltage transformer, UPS, PDU and busway, in-rack 415 VAC to 54 VDC power shelves, 54 V busbar and tray VRMs at 82.0% end-to-end efficiency, versus the 800 VDC chain from medium voltage through a facility rectifier or sidecar power rack, 800 VDC busway and in-rack DC-DC conversion at 87.4%, with 45% less copper and about 750 A instead of 11,100 to 12,500 A for a 600 kW rack.

What is an 800 VDC data center?

Today's AI hall moves power through seven conversion stages: utility medium voltage, a transformer to 415 or 480 VAC, a double-conversion UPS, PDUs and busway, in-rack shelves that rectify 415 VAC to 54 VDC, a 54 V busbar, and tray regulators to below 1 V. SemiAnalysis measures that chain at 82.0% end to end (SemiAnalysis, May 2026).

An 800 VDC data center rectifies AC to 800 VDC once, in a rack-adjacent power rack now and in facility rectifiers or solid-state transformers (SSTs) later, then runs DC busway to racks whose converters step 800 V straight to 12 V beside the GPU. SemiAnalysis puts that chain at 87.4%, in line with NVIDIA's claims of "up to 5%" better end-to-end efficiency and 45% less copper than 415 VAC (NVIDIA, May 2025); McKinsey estimates 40–50% less copper (McKinsey, Jul 2026).

A version note: NVIDIA's May 2025 post said "85% more power through the same conductor size"; its October 2025 whitepaper says 157% more than 415 VAC, 1.7 versus 0.6 kW per mm² (NVIDIA whitepaper, Oct 2025). We use the latter.

Why can't a 1 MW rack run on 54 volts?

Current. At a fixed voltage, amps scale with rack power. A 600 kW rack at 800 V draws about 750 A; at 48–54 V it would draw roughly 11,100–12,500 A (SemiAnalysis), and copper, connectors and resistive loss scale with it. NVIDIA's arithmetic for a 1 MW rack at 54 V is "up to 200 kg of copper busbar" and "up to 64 U" of power shelves, and "as racks exceed 200 kW, this approach begins to hit physical limits" (NVIDIA, May 2025).

The racks are past that line. GB200 NVL72 draws 132 kW with 192 kW of busway provisioned (HPE, Sep 2026); Kyber is specified at 600 kW (DCD, Mar 2025); and NVIDIA targets "1 MW racks starting 2027" (NVIDIA, May 2025).

Rack power ladder from about 25 kW for A100-class racks and 40 kW for H100 to 132 kW for GB200 NVL72, up to 250 kW for Vera Rubin NVL72 in 2026, 600 kW for the Kyber rack and 1 MW native racks, with current at 54 VDC rising from roughly 460 A to 18,500 A while current at 800 VDC stays between about 30 A and 1,250 A.

What are NVIDIA's three deployment options, and when do they ship?

NVIDIA's second whitepaper sets out three steps (NVIDIA whitepaper v2, 2026).

What changes at the rack with Vera Rubin NVL72 in 2026?

Vera Rubin NVL72 straddles the transition: a low-voltage busbar inside the rack, fed by AC power shelves or, through a sidecar, by 800 VDC. NVIDIA's March 2026 numbers: roughly 4,000 lb, 45 °C inlet water, a 5,000 A liquid-cooled busbar and six times Blackwell's rack-level energy storage (400 J per GPU), cutting peak current by up to 25% (NVIDIA, Mar 2026). The MGX 1.2 specification open-sourced on October 12, 2026 allows up to 250 kW per rack (NVIDIA, Oct 2026).

The floor is the developer's number. A 1,500 kg GB200 NVL72 compute rack already loads it at roughly 1,875 kg/m² against a typical 1,000 kg/m² raised-floor rating (Introl, citing NVIDIA's deployment guide), and Vera Rubin is about a fifth heavier.

When does the 600 kW Kyber rack arrive?

Jensen Huang introduced Kyber at GTC 2025 as the Rubin Ultra NVL576 rack, "Each rack is 600 kW, 2.5 million parts," for 2H 2027 (DCD, Mar 18, 2025). The GTC 2026 roadmap kept Kyber for 2027 as an NVL144 system, with Feynman in 2028 (DCD, Mar 20, 2026). On July 6, 2026 SemiAnalysis reported that Kyber had slipped to 2028 over midplane manufacturability and that Rubin Ultra had been cut to two dies; NVIDIA did not comment (SDxCentral, Jul 2026). Kyber's weight is unpublished, and we do not use the "1.4 MW rack" figure seen in some coverage; no primary source supports it.

Unipolar 800 V or ±400 V: which standard wins?

NVIDIA chose unipolar 800 V because two-pole breakers for it exist and bipolar protective devices do not (NVIDIA whitepaper v2). The Mt. Diablo specification from Google, Meta and Microsoft, published in April 2025, uses ±400 VDC for 1 MW racks to "leverage the supply chain established by electric vehicles" (Google Cloud, Apr 2025). In August 2026 NVIDIA reported alignment with Google and Microsoft, and a native-800 V Mt. Diablo 2.0 is "coming later," without a date (NVIDIA, Aug 2026). The shell items below serve both camps; where they diverge (busway, breakers, grounding), let the tenant buy and avoid a mixed campus.

Legal, and less settled than legal sounds. NEC 2026 moved systems above 1,500 VDC into new Articles 265–270, so 800 VDC stays low voltage, and revised 110.16 labels must state voltage, boundary, incident energy and date (Conductor Wire, Mar 2026). Engineering commentary maps the applicable articles as 645, 712 (DC microgrids), 240 and 110; NFPA 855 attaches once batteries sit on the DC bus (Jason Agee, May 2026).

Arc flash is the practical gap: there is no IEEE 1584 method for DC, so engineers fall back on NFPA 70E Annex D (Agee). Schneider Electric's August 2026 sidecar study found incident energy below 1.2 cal/cm², because capacitor discharge dominates the fault (Schneider Electric, Aug 20, 2026). Grounding, whether high-resistance, floating or solid, is still an open choice (NVIDIA whitepaper v2).

Listings lag. UL Solutions leads OCP's codes-and-standards workstream after a gap analysis of more than 60 standards (UL Solutions, Oct 2026); UL 857 Edition 14 raised DC busway to 1,000 VDC (DCD, Feb 2026); no UL-certified data-center SST existed as of May 2026, and SemiAnalysis expects partial NEC support in 2029 (SemiAnalysis). In Jason Agee's words, "an unfavorable insurance position can stop a project as effectively as a permit denial."

What changes in the building, room by room?

Phase 1 "deletes nothing": the sidecar sits in white space, the UPS and switchgear stay, and non-IT loads stay on AC (SemiAnalysis).

The schedule driver does not change: large power transformers still average about 128 weeks (Wood Mackenzie, Oct 2025), and the sequence in How a Data Center Is Built still applies.

What does 800 VDC cost per MW?

Two numbers that look contradictory are both right. McKinsey estimates that native 800 VDC cuts non-IT capex 15–18%, saves $4–8 million per 10 MW and trims power opex 8–10% (McKinsey, Jul 2026). SemiAnalysis estimates that the sidecar phase adds about $400–500k per MW, because an 800 VDC power rack costs roughly ten times an AC power rack and nothing upstream is removed, within total electrical content of $3.6–4.8 million per MW (SemiAnalysis). The saving arrives with the row and facility phases; the premium arrives first.

How does ERCOT treat 800 VDC loads?

NVIDIA describes AI halls as "hundreds of megawatts ramping up and down in seconds" (NVIDIA, Oct 2025), so 800 VDC is also a storage architecture: capacitors for events under 100 ms, hybrid storage to 10 s, batteries beyond that and a BESS at the interconnect (NVIDIA whitepaper, Oct 2025). OCP's Grid Resilience specification targets a return to near-full load within 2 s of a grid event (NVIDIA, Oct 2026).

IEEE Spectrum reported in July 2026 that ERCOT's Large Load Working Group is evaluating 800 VDC designs, that ERCOT had logged 438 GW of large-load requests, and that the PUC approved ERCOT's large-load proposal with ride-through and load-smoothing provisions (IEEE Spectrum, Jul 2026). Storage that flattens a hall's draw is what those provisions reward, including at the sub-75 MW sites in Small, Bespoke AI Data Centers.

What should an 800 VDC-ready shell include today?

Nine items, none requiring DC equipment before a tenant asks:

  1. MV yard and 34.5 or 13.8 kV gear sized for 2 MW rows and 4.8 MW blocks.
  2. Grey-space pad and conduit for rectifier or SST skids.
  3. Structure for two-tonne racks plus one sidecar position each.
  4. 45 °C warm-water loop and CDU space in 2.4 MW increments.
  5. Hangers and routing for 1,250 A DC busway.
  6. Grounding grid that can run high-resistance grounded.
  7. BESS pad with NFPA 855 setbacks.
  8. AHJ pre-application with a compliance map (NEC 645, 712; NFPA 855, 70E).
  9. DC-trained O&M and PPE program before the first sidecar lands.

What could still go wrong?

  • Standards. Grounding "becomes a vendor-ecosystem commitment" and maturity is a 2032–35 event (SemiAnalysis); unipolar 800 V and ±400 V are not interchangeable at the busway, and Mt. Diablo 2.0 has no date (NVIDIA, Aug 2026).
  • Serviceability. Distributed batteries and capacitors are harder to run than one central UPS, and stored DC energy at the rack defeats AC lockout habits.
  • Delivery. Kyber has reportedly moved to 2028, and Vertiv now says sidecar deployments "begin in 2027" (Vertiv). Plan the shell for it; do not plan the lease start around it.

Frequently asked questions

What is an 800 VDC data center?

A facility that rectifies utility AC to 800 volts DC once, in a sidecar power rack, a row power center or a facility rectifier, and distributes DC to racks whose converters step 800 V straight to 12 V beside the GPU.

When will 800 VDC be needed?

Sidecar power racks enter production in Q3 2026 alongside Vera Rubin NVL72, which still accepts AC. Native 800 VDC becomes necessary at Kyber-class 600 kW racks, planned for 2027 and reportedly slipping to 2028, and at the 1 MW racks NVIDIA targets from 2027.

Can an existing AC data center be retrofitted for 800 VDC?

For the first phase, yes: NVIDIA's power rack installs "without modification to upstream AC electrical rooms" and feeds 800 VDC to adjacent racks. Native 800 VDC needs new distribution: SST skids, DC busway, DC-rated protection and a grounding scheme.

Is 800 VDC legal under the NEC?

Yes. NEC 2026 keeps systems below 1,500 VDC in the low-voltage articles, and NFPA 855 attaches once batteries sit on the bus. Listings, a DC arc-flash method and trained workers lag, so engage the AHJ and the insurer early.

Does 800 VDC change the utility interconnect or generators?

No. Medium-voltage rectifiers take 34.5 kV utility distribution, so the substation, interconnection agreement and generators stay as designed. What is added is energy storage on the DC bus and ride-through controls, which is what ERCOT's load-smoothing provisions reward.

How much power does a Vera Rubin rack use?

NVIDIA's MGX 1.2 specification allows up to 250 kW per Vera Rubin NVL72 rack on a 5,000 A liquid-cooled busbar at 45 °C inlet; the whitepaper v2 lists a 330 kW Gen-2 capability with AC or DC input. The rack weighs roughly 4,000 lb and ships in 2H 2026.
